about

It’s one thing to do a doo-wop version of Flop, or an Ennio Morricone version of Mudhoney, but messing with Beat Happening feels a bit like disturbing hallowed ground. I grew up in Olympia but I was too insecure and shy to hang out with the punk kids. I may have missed the point, but Beat Happening helped me get it eventually. They were both inspiring and terrifying because they removed all barriers to starting a band. It was almost like they were challenging you to do it. That was part of their genius, and just because they made it look easy doesn’t mean it is, but just the idea that maybe you *could* do it was enough. It's the DIY ethic in a nutshell. No one except you is stopping you. Without this band, I’m not sure I would have tried, and that would have been my loss. -Charles
